There are no upcoming trips for F1, as it is due to enter HET’s Redfern workshop facility shortly for overhaul of two cars.
Heritage set W3 will be running two trips to the Sydney Tramway Museum in Loftus on Sunday 23rd February. Bookings will open shortly at the THNSW / NSW Rail Museum web site.
Jolly Johnson also has some exciting trips planned for W3 coming up in March 2023.
HET are also planning to run heritage double deck set S28 in coming months so please watch their web site for announcements.

Hi! Many thanks 🙂 Excellent article.
Good evening. Thanks a lot! Really enjoyed reading this page.
Hi
Left HETS after Mathews was in total denial regarding my comments on the number of people riding between carriages while the train was in motion. Fix the problem and stop the denial. As soon as one of these idiots falls of the train and it will happen F1 will never run again.
Hi Gary.
On the “Shunts and Yards” tour, one of the covid controls imposed was to minimise passenger handling of doors and the best way to deal with this was to hold the inter communication doors open so they wouldn’t continually be handled by passengers constantly opening and closing them. Whilst this removes one risk it introduces another, in that passengers may then be tempted to travel between the carriages.
The carriage attendants are under directions to keep this area supervised and ask anyone found travelling in this position to promptly move within either car. The alternative is to close the doors and prohibit movement between carriages altogether.
I wasn’t personally aware of anyone travelling in between carriages (i.e. with one foot on either side of the buffer plates) although I was aware of some passengers standing at the doorway taking photos etc (which is still OK). Your concern is noted and will be addressed before F1’s next operation.
I would like to book for the December 19th Christmas tour. How do I go about doing that?
You can still book at https://www.123tix.com.au/events/12500/southern-nights-christmas-tour. Tickets are however selling fast so get in soon.
The tour departs Strathfield Station at 2:30 p.m. December 19th.
Good to see F1 back in action, it would be great if HET published updates like this on their website.
On a separate note, how is the restoration of W3 going?
Hi Daniel.
As you can imagine, there’s lots of politics involved in restoring and operating heritage trains on the main line network. Sometimes it’s easier to keep some communications “off the record” and in an independent space so as to not tread on the toes of anyone who might not agree with some opinions. For this reason the HET web site tends to include only items pertaining to that organisation only, rather than offering comment on wider news affecting the heritage electric fleet. This site “redsetf1.com.au” exists as an independent news source and draws from many different sources including HET, Transport Heritage NSW, Sydney Trains and many associated individuals. Basically if something is printed here and it later turns out to be wrong, HET won’t get into trouble for it.
W3 restoration is progressing well and it looks like meeting Sydney Trains’ deadline of January 2021 for delivery to Flemington Maintenance Centre. It will hopefully be operating by mid 2021 after further heavy works at FMC and driver training.
It’s great to that you guys are working so hard to keep the good old ” red rattlers” in running order. I can’t remember the date, but l was J.S.A at Warwick Farm when l 1st saw F39 for the 1st time l had just crossed to down side to collect (no opal cards back then) the tickets & to see it coming from W/farm junction box what a great site, all brand new, gleaming red with silver roof. Its a pitty none of those cars are in operation with you guys. Thank you 100 % gor your GREAT work.?????
Thanks Terry.
